Enrolling children in school after moving to Puerto Rico
Confirm the actual school and placement, then close enrollment, records, health, calendar, transportation, meal, language, and support-service questions with that institution.

Confirm the placement, not only the application

Private, parochial, home-school, early-childhood, university, and specialized-program processes are institution-specific. Use the responsible institution's current instructions rather than transferring a DEPR checklist to a different setting.
Prepare records without inventing a universal checklist
- Identity and authority: be ready to establish the student's identity, the enrolling adult's identity, guardianship or custody authority, and the relationship between names shown across records.
- Address and school history: preserve the exact residence evidence requested, prior enrollment, grade, transcripts, report cards, attendance, credits, course descriptions, withdrawal record, and school contacts.
- Health: bring the current immunization record, health forms, medication and emergency instructions, allergy information, and any medical or religious exemption evidence that applies. Puerto Rico's Department of Health publishes a school-year-specific vaccination sheet, currently for 2026–27. [2]
- Learning and access: preserve evaluations, individualized plans, accommodations, assistive-technology information, behavior or safety plans, language information, and records of current services and providers.
Use current-year dates and school-specific facts
DEPR publishes a school-year calendar with instructional periods, class dates, holidays, professional days, and other system dates. The current page covers 2026–27, so label any date with its school year and recheck for amendments before relying on it. [3]
DEPR's E-Data gateway links school-search, profile, record-exchange, operating, and report tools. Use each tool's own data date and definition; a dashboard or report does not establish a current seat, program, service, transportation route, or recommendation for a particular student. [4]
- Confirm the exact school's daily schedule, orientation, first attendance date, dismissal, transportation, meals, devices, uniforms, supplies, attendance procedure, communications channel, and emergency contacts.
- Ask how the school handles English and Spanish instruction, student language assessment, family communication, accessibility, counseling, nursing, extracurricular activities, and transfers of credit or grade placement.
- Visit or speak with the school when possible. Separate current first-hand answers from older directory data, generalized rankings, neighborhood reputation, and marketing claims.
Carry support plans into the receiving system
DEPR's parent-resource page links MiPE and special-education rights, complaint, and provisional-remedy materials. Use it to identify the current responsible office and process, then document what was requested, what records were received, and what service or decision is actually confirmed. [5]
Healthcare transition
Coordinate coverage, medicines, records, providers, equipment, and urgent-care needs before the student's old arrangements end.
Mail and address changes
Update each school and agency directly instead of assuming postal forwarding changes an underlying record.
